Reverse osmosis only works under pressure, and the pump is what supplies it. Feed pumps move raw water into the system at a stable rate; high-pressure pumps drive water across the membrane surface. Both have to be matched to the plant's flow and recovery, because an undersized pump quietly costs you output every hour it runs.
